The Dodgers added to the pool of overall depth on Thursday with the signing of veteran infielder/outfielder Chris Owings. The 32-year-old joins the team on a minor league deal with an invite to major league camp.

Owings is a name plenty familiar to Dodgers fans. He made his debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks and spent the first 6 years of his career in the desert, slashing .250/.291/.378 over 580 games. Since leaving the D-backs, he’s bounced around the league playing for the Royals, Red Sox, Rockies, Orioles and most recently with the Pirates.
While he was once a fairly serviceable player with the bat, Owings has been putrid at the plate since 2018 hitting just .189 over 626 at-bats. But, he’s not joining the Dodgers to be a threat at the plate in LA. He’s with the team as a depth option all around the diamond but primarily at shortstop where he’s played 263 of his 679 career games as a big leaguer. He can also play second base, third base, and all three spots in the outfield.
If we see Owings at any point this season, someone got hurt at the big league level and is heading to the injured list. Then three or four more guys got hurt.
